WISELY - Making the Right Decision When to Charge and
What it Should Cost
Deciding when to charge your new EV is a personal
decision dependent upon your individual schedule. Just
like a traditional internal combustion vehicle needs to
be fueled, your EV needs to be charged to keep it
running. Only this refueling you get to do at home,
without the mess, odor or high cost! Soon youll
even be able to charge at your workplace, favorite mall
or maybe even your local movie theater. So, here are some
tips on how to recharge most economically.
Q: When is the best time to
recharge my Electric Vehicle (EV)?
Startup costs in this industry are reasonable. It is possible to start a vending machine route for less than a few thousand dollars. The work of a Vending machines business operator can be divided into two basic areas. As a vending machine business owner you can choose to work by yourself, with a partner or hire teams to work for you A: With the arrival of
electric vehicles, many utilities are offering special EV
rates which can provide significant savings. With an EV
time-of-use rate schedule, you pay less during off-peak
hours, when the overall demand of electricity is lowest.
Varying by utility, these special hours usually span from
nighttime to morning hours, and could provide for
substantial savings over normal rates. Since these
off-peak hours may be the same hours that you are
sleeping - and your car is not being used - its an
ideal time to charge. Not all utilities provide less
expensive nighttime charging, so please check with your
utility.
Q: How much will I save by
charging my EV during off-peak hours with time-of-use
rates?
A: By using the off-peak EV
rate, you could save as much as 65% over standard
household electricity rates. We encourage you to contact
your utility to find out what programs they have
available to meet your needs. Upon your request, we will
also install a timer that will be set to automatically
charge your vehicle during off-peak times.
Q: How much will it cost to
charge my car using the time-of-use rates for Electric
Vehicles?
A: Your costs will vary
depending upon the time of day and season in which you
charge your vehicle, how much you drive your vehicle and
the rate program offered by your utility. All things
considered though, it could cost as little as about 27
cents a day to charge at night with an EV time-of-use
rate. In addition, most public charging will be free over
the next several years.
Q: Will charging cost me less
than I spend today fueling my car with gas?
A: Yes. By subscribing to an
EV rate, you could save as much as 75%. If you were to
drive a gasoline powered vehicle 10,000 miles per year,
averaging 28 miles per gallon at $1.30 per gallon, it
would cost about $464 per year to fuel. By using
electricity to power your vehicle, your cost could drop
to as low as $100 annually with EV off-peak rates, and to
about $280 per year with peak electricity rates.
Q: When should I contact my
utility about the special EV charging rate?
A: At Edison EV, we
recommend that you contact your utility as soon as you
begin to consider installing a charger in your home. Your
utility will assist you by providing information about
any available EV charging rates and advise you whether a
separate time-of-use meter is necessary.
Q: How can I apply for a special
EV charging rate?
A: Once you have made the
decision to install a charger, contact your local utility
and let them know you are interested in applying for the
special EV charging rate, if offered. They will schedule
any necessary meter installations and set up a special
billing rate for your EV charging, if available.
Q: How do I know how to get in
touch with the right people at the utility that serves my
home?
A: Designated groups have
been formed within many of the utilities to serve the
special needs of customers such as yourself. If you would

you, click below for a list of utilities and contact
